These Hot Topics are pages for in-depth information on various cat topics. I'll pull together Web links, book titles, statistics, and other sources of information or products relevant to those topics. The latest Hot Topic is litter boxes—the good, the bad, and the ugly. Check out this page for information on selecting a box and the litter to go in it, as well as things to look out for when bathroom habits show problems of some kind. A previous topic was is hyperthyroidism—a common condition in older cats. My cat Banzai was diagnosed with hyper-T last summer and began treatment for it. At the next blood test, we found that she also has early stage kidney disease (see the previous Hot Topic). The hyperthyroidism actually masked the kidney disease at first, because it causes increased blood flow to the kidneys, improving their functioning. Another Hot Topic is one I'm dealing with myself right now as well—chronic renal failure, or kidney disease. CRF is a very common disease among older cats. Some experts say screening for kidney disease should be done annually after the age of seven because symptoms are very hard to spot until the disease has progressed quite a bit. For information on CRF and its symptoms, treatment options, support groups, and product information, see my CRF page. Check back for more Hot Topics in the future.
